Well, folks, it’s Tuesday. You know what means: new DVDs and Blu-Rays are released today. This is going to be the first in a weekly installment of DVD/Blu-Ray release updates, spotlighting some of the week’s best releases. This feature will be posted every Tuesday, so keep an eye out. All right, let’s get to it!
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
This is the big one for this week. Peter Jackson’s first in the three-part trilogy of J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit. The film stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Sir Ian McKellen returns as iconic wizard Gandolf from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. There’s not much in the way of bonus content here, except for the video blogs from the set that were released during production of the film. You’v probably already seen them, but if not, now’s your chance. Look out for it on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 3D Blu-Ray from Warner Bros.
Zero Dark Thirty
Kathryn Bigelow’s follow-up to Best Picture Oscar winner The Hurt Locker, this one stars Jessica Chastain who spearheads the operation to find and terminate Osama Bin Laden. (It also features two of my favorite comic actors, Chris Pratt and Mark Duplass.) I haven’t seen ZDT yet, but it was one of the most well-received films of last year. Unfortunately, there’s only about 30 minutes worth of extras here. They give a sneak peek into how the film was made. Check it out on DVD and Blu-Ray from Sony.
Les Miserables
Also nominated for Best Picture this year is Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the hit broadway musical Les Miserables. The film and musical numbers were highly praised by audiences and critics alike, and Anne Hathaway won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her brief appearance in the film. There’s a lot of bonus content here, including behind-the-scenes footage and commentary with director Tom Hooper. Check it out on DVD and Blu-Ray from Universal.
